Newcastle Upon Tyne Exhausts
Backboxes, Mufflers & Pipes

There are 3 parts to an exhaust system plus a catalyst for reducing emissions:

The Exhaust Manifold
Collects the exhaust gases from the engine ignition chambers

Exhaust Pipes
Act as a conduit to transfer toxic exhaust gases away from the driver towards the rear of the vehicle or above the cabin

Muffler or Backbox
Helps eliminate excessive engine noise by dampening soundwaves and absorbing sound energy

Catalyst (Catalytic Convertor)
Once brought up to temperature by combustion gases; the catalyst helps for carbon dioxide and soot from unburnt and partially combusted fuel

What does the EGR Valve Do?

Part of the exhaust gas is fed back into the ignition chamber with fresh fuel and air to help produce a more complete combustion
The EGR valve is operated by a vacuum to open a passageway between the exhaust manifold and inlet manifold
The EGR valve helps to burn fuel more completely and efficiently
By controlling the fuel mix and temperature the EGR valve helps reduce emissions

Faulty, Stuck or Leaking EGR Valve

The engine idle will flutuate and acceleration will seem sluggish - This can also be caused by a faulty air flow meter, lambda sensor, etc as the ECU tries to maintain the correct air-fuel mix

If you think there is a problem with your exhaust or ignition system including sensors and valves then arrange for an inspection and a repair estimate
